Before the match against Sparta, Sydney van Hooijdonk paid little attention to seeing his old trainer Maurice Steijn again. The two worked together at NAC Breda and Steijn also does not get along well with Sydney’s father Pierre.
That has everything to do with what happened at NAC, a lot has already been said about that. “No, I don’t care,” says Van Hooijdonk at ESPN when asked whether the hassle around Steijn is still alive with him.
“To be honest, I’m long past it and I’m now at Heerenveen, he at Sparta. I think it’s strange that he made statements on television at, what’s the name of that program? Veronica Offside, yes,” says Van Hooijdonk. In that broadcast, Steijn answered affirmatively to the question whether he thinks Van Hooijdonk Sr. is ‘an asshole’. “I think that’s disrespectful, but Maurice has to know that himself. I don’t care about the rest anymore. I’m doing fine and so is he. I have nothing to do with him anymore.”
In the run-up to the match, Steijn was positive about Van Hooijdonk jr. “What should he say? I don’t think he can say I’m doing very badly, but it’s good to hear. The only thing I can influence is what I do it myself. It’s fine that Maurice says it.”
