The Australian man who stabbed six people to death in a shopping center yesterday had psychological problems. The man suffered from schizophrenia and was known to the police, a spokesperson said. Terrorism is excluded.
The 40-year-old man had recently moved from Brisbane to Sydney. Yesterday afternoon he attacked the public in a shopping center near the famous Bondi Beach.
Six people did not survive, five women and one man. One of the victims is a 38-year-old mother who tried to save her seriously injured baby by shaking hands with passers-by. The child has been admitted to hospital.
In addition to the baby, sixteen others were injured. Twelve of them were in such bad shape that they had to be treated in hospital.
‘Could have been a lot worse’
The perpetrator was shot dead by a police officer in the shopping center. “She has shown enormous courage,” the police commissioner praised the officer. “It was a terrible situation, but it could have been much worse.”
Police will investigate how the man acquired a large hunting knife despite Australia’s strict gun laws. Stories that he has previously harassed women are also being investigated.
Flowers have now been laid at the shopping center for the victims. The complex is still considered a crime scene and will not open for the time being.
