Melbourne was chosen as the venue for the third Test following the recent outbreak of Kovid in Sydney. However, Cricket Australia has made it clear that Sydney will be the venue for the third Test after the second Test in Melbourne.
Cricket Australia’s decision to hold the match in Sydney was prompted by the expansion of the Kovid Test in New South Wales and the decline in community coverage. The assurance of the authorities that players going to Brisbane for the fourth Test after the third Test from Sydney will be exempted from strict quarantine is another factor that prompted Cricket Australia to hold the third Test in Sydney itself.
However, Cricket Australia has not ruled out the possibility of hosting the match in Melbourne if conditions in Sydney become uncontrollable again. The third Test is scheduled to start on January 7, so there is ample time to make a final decision. Both teams are now 1-1 up, having won each of the first two Tests of the series.
