Sydney lockdown extended • German minister: China vaccine donations for political gain

The Australian state of New South Wales has extended its lockdown in Sydney for another two weeks. The state’s prime minister, Gladys Berejiklian, made this known after 97 new corona infections were reported. Berejiklian said earlier that the lockdown will only be lifted if virtually no more contamination is detected.

In Sydney, non-essential shops have been closed since June 26 and many students are also staying at home. Residents are only allowed to go outside for necessary activities, or to play sports.

Since the first new infection in mid-June, almost 900 new registered cases have been added. Due to strict measures, relatively few infections and corona-related deaths have been detected in the country, 31,300 and 912 respectively. Vaccinating the population is difficult. So far, less than 10 percent of the population has been fully vaccinated, a much lower percentage than other western countries.
