Sydney high-security prison riot, inmates on the roof

An uprising has been suppressed in a high-security prison near the Australian city of Sydney. Prisoners had climbed onto the roof of the building via a rope. They can be seen in photos taken from a helicopter. It also shows fire and smoke.

Armed guards rescued the prisoners from the roof of one of the building’s wings. According to the Parklea Correctional Center leadership, fourteen inmates had managed to climb onto the roof. The prison crisis team and security personnel mobilized and security forces were also called in to quell the uprising. The fire brigade extinguished the fire.

In the photos taken shortly after the start of the uprising, bare-chested prisoners sit and lie in the sun. After the deployment of the special forces, they lie on their stomachs on the roof with their heads on their hands.

Some 50 prisoners who were in courtyards also rebelled, refusing to listen to orders from the guards. They were chased back inside with tear gas and taken to their cells.

In the prison, which is run by a private company, inmates are in medium or extra heavy security.
