SWR2 Matinee | Flotter Feger: der Besen – SWR2

Sunday feuilleton with Georg Brandl.

When Harry Potter or “The Little Witch” travel further distances, they mount their broomsticks and fly away. The SWR2 Matinee does it in a similar way: We float through space and time on and with the broom.

Three hours of sweeping and sweeping, flying and jazzing, running and stirring. Because the broom is more than a cleaning device. Anyone who plays Quidditch clamps it between their legs and chases after several balls at the same time. Whoever plays the drums strokes the eardrum. And if you’re breaking egg whites, you might use a whisk.

We visit the largest broom museum in the world. We tell the story of the Schwäbische Kehrwoche. And we collect exhausted athletes with the broom wagon.

We speak to Harald Klein from Ramberg in the Palatinate, one of the last broom makers in Germany, and Werner Mezger, emeritus folklorist at the University of Freiburg.
