REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Ear nose throat head and neck surgery expert at Dr Cipto Mangungkusumo Hospital Dr Ika Dewi Mayangsari, SpTHT-BKL, SubspOnk(K), FICS, said that enlarged tonsils accompanied by fever and symptoms such as painful swallowing are possible due to infection rather than tumor. “It hurts to the point where I can’t eat because of inflammation of the tonsils. Then enlargement of the lymph nodes, when you look at it tonsils red and enlarged on the left and right, it could be an infection or tonsillitis,” he said in an event with the theme ‘Large Tonsils: Tumor or Infection?’ which was held online, Tuesday (5/12/2023).
Meanwhile, enlargement of the tonsils due to tumors, continued Ika, is usually only on one side of the tonsils, namely the left or right. Then, this enlargement does not occur suddenly but tends to be slow, for example two weeks, one month or even three months.
“Because if the enlargement is sudden on one side, there is an illness, accompanied by fever, and pain when swallowing, it can be called an abscess. If it is an abscess it may take a matter of days, from normal, in a matter of one or three days it has enlarged on one side, ” explained Ika.
Other signs enlarged tonsils The result of the tumor is a change in voice. This occurs due to the size of the tonsils increasing until they cover the throat or mouth cavity. The sound produced is not hoarse or nasal but rather like someone eating a hot potato or is called a hot potato voice.
“What happens, for example, if there is a tumor, is like eating a hot potato. It’s not hoarse or nasal, but a hot potato voice. If there is a change in voice, difficulty swallowing, that’s what usually makes the patient feel like there’s something in the throat,” said Ika.
One more thing that distinguishes enlarged tonsils due to tumors is that they cannot be cured with anti-inflammatory drugs or antibiotics, as is the case due to infection. On the other hand, lumps or tonsillitis tend to increase in size or number.
