Swollen lips after vaccination are rare

Ever since Hollywood stars like Kylie Jenner, Megan Fox or rapper Loredana have been open to having hyaluronic acid injected into their lips with a fine needle, this aesthetic change has been one of the most popular minimally invasive procedures. But jawline corrections, in which the chin and jaw area is defined, or cheek construction with hyaluronic acid are also becoming increasingly popular with young women. Slight swelling is common right after the procedure.

Several women on Tiktok now show more than just “slight” swellings. Their faces and lips are massively swollen. The Covid vaccination should be to blame for this, write the users. In particular, the vaccines Moderna and Pfizer are criticized here. They are said to have swelling in dermal fillers as side effects.

American study shows that swelling can occur

For an American study recently over 15,000 women vaccinated with Moderna who had used dermal fillers were interviewed. Three of the participants had swelling on their faces afterwards. Two of them a few hours after the vaccination, another two weeks later. The symptoms would have completely resolved after a maximum of three days.

The EU Committee on Medicinal Safety has dealt with the issue. In a so-called “security update” it says: “Swelling in the face of people with dermal fillers is shown as a possible side effect.”

The number of those affected is not too great

Rosalia Luketina, a specialist in plastic and aesthetic surgery, is not very surprised at the massive swellings after a corona vaccination: “The ingredient in the vaccination can trigger a delayed inflammatory reaction in people who have been treated with fillers. Antibodies are formed in response to the foreign material, i.e. the filler. “

With reference to the American study, the doctor emphasizes that the massive swellings are rare – even if the many Tiktok videos could give a different impression. “We do at least 15 injections a day and nobody has reported to us with such side effects,” she says.

“Filler shouldn’t prevent you from vaccinating”

But how dangerous is a vaccination if I recently had my lips or cheeks injected? The websites of various beauty clinics that offer dermal fillers already warn of a possible allergic reaction.

It is important to educate the patient and point out possible “immunological trigger substances”, such as the vaccines may contain. Luketina would not advise against the vaccination under any circumstances: “The fact that you have fillers should not prevent you from getting vaccinated – the same applies the other way round, you can get injections despite being vaccinated.”
