Switzerland’s Role as a Haven for Russian Oligarchs, Corrupt Officials, and Circumventing Export Controls

For years, Switzerland has been “the preferred target of Russian oligarchs and corrupt officials to hide their stolen money,” according to the Helsinki Commission’s official announcement. In addition, Switzerland also plays a “key role in Russia’s circumvention of export controls, which are intended to ensure that Russia cannot upgrade its military and continue its war”. The panel also criticized Switzerland for wanting to release most of the CHF 18 million confiscated in the Magnitsky case.
