Swiss handball players win the Yellow Cup in Winterthur for the second time in a row and for the eighth time in total. Coach Michael Suter’s team wins in the “final” against Austria 29:28.
The Swiss had to win against the Austrians, who had already won twice, a draw would not have been enough to win the tournament due to 29:29 against Cape Verde on Saturday. The hosts did it thanks to a strong defense in the second half: they were 15:15 at half-time after falling behind by 12:15.
In the 34th minute, Kuettel gave the Swiss the lead by 17:16 for the first time in the game. Ten minutes later, the locals were leading for the first time with three goals (23:20), the last time at 28:25 (53rd). However, the 2000 spectators in the sold out arena had to tremble to the end. At 28:29 the Austrians regain possession eight seconds before the final siren, but fail to equalize.
Lenny Rubin, who scored six of his eight goals in the second half and missed just once in the second half, played a big part in the second win. Thanks to a combative performance, the Swiss were able to afford the star player Andy Schmid to score only five of 13 shots on target and lost the goalkeeping duel with 8:13 saves.
On 13 January, the Swiss will face Austria again in Bregenz before their two European Championship qualifiers against Hungary in March. Then, after victories against Georgia (24:23) and Lithuania (27:26), they want to take another step towards the final of the 2024 European Championship in Germany.
