She was one of the early favourites.
Nemo Mettler24, from Switzerland claimed victory in Eurovision after a turbulent week with his song “The code”.
A Eurovision year like this, which has been dominated by security issues – the war between Israel and Hamas, threats and hatred on social media and everything other than music – how has it affected you and how does it feel to have won?
– Sometimes it felt like it wasn’t all about love and music and that made me sad. But there has also been a lot of love and people filled with energy and who love music that have met, it has given me hope, she says in response to Aftonbladet’s question.
You are the first non-binary artist to win Eurovision song contestwhen I say those words, how does it make you feel?
– It makes me incredibly proud, not just for me but for the whole community, for everyone out there who is non-binary, transgender. People who dare to be themselves and who need to be listened to and understood. We need more care and empathy, we need to listen to each other. We have to try to understand each other: instead of talking about each other, we need to talk to each other and I really think that tonight can be a way to remind us of that, she also tells Aftonbladet.
– I hope that this competition can live up to the promise to continue to stand for peace and dignity for all people in this world, says Nemo as she tearfully accepts the winner’s statuette from last year’s winner of flowers.

Broke the victory trophy – and the thumb
After the winning performance, attentive viewers noted how she put the trophy down so violently that it crashed: the foot detached from the rest. At the press conference, the Swedish-designed trophy was replaced with a whole one.
– I didn’t just break “The Code”, I also broke my statuette and my thumb, it’s okay, he says to the audience’s worried reactions to his bandaged thumb and then looks at the trophy.
– I got a new one, so I have two now.
Nemo came fifth among the people’s votes but had to receive a full 22 twelve out of a possible 36 from the jury groups.

“Made me sad”
When she received the perhaps most asked question: “how does it feel” after the win, the artist replied that she feels overwhelmed.
– This is not like anything my brain has ever had to process before. I am grateful for the experience and everyone I got to know during this trip.

“Eurovision may need to be fixed a bit”
During the flag parade that opened the final, Nemo displayed the non-binary flag. When he hears that people in the audience who tried to bring the same flag into the arena were asked to get rid of them, he says that he also had to smuggle it in – against the EBU’s orders.
– I think it’s a double standard. My figurine broke, but it could be fixed. Maybe Eurovision also needs a bit of preparation? he says.

Coming out as non-binary in Fall 2023
When Aftonbladet’s reporter interviewed the artist earlier this week, he said that the whole thing even then felt like a double victory.
She came out as non-binary as late as fall 2023 and the song, “The Code”, is about how she understood why she felt different and therefore means a lot to the artist.
– I’m really happy to have been able to raise awareness for non-binary people. For my part, I would never compromise who I am on stage or choose an outfit that is not me, for example, he said then.

The big favorite came second
Second in the competition came the advance favorite Croatia, who competed with the artist Baby Lasagna and the song “Rim tim tagi dim”. Third place went to Ukraine and the artists Alyona Alyona & Jerry Heil with the song “Teresa & Maria”, just before France’s Slimane who finished fourth with the song “Mon amour”.
Israel, who was booed on several occasions by the audience in the arena, finished fifth. Despite the criticism against Israel’s participation, due to the country’s war in Gaza, they thus received considerable points from Europe’s television viewers.
