Switzerland welcomes the year 2021 with bells ringing

(sda) In Bern, the bells of the minster rang out the old year and the new year. Because there are no large gatherings of people in the public space due to the coronavirus restrictions, this time all twelve bells of the cathedral could be heard and the tones were not drowned in the screeching of the celebrants.

The official large fireworks had been canceled in advance. However, in some places firecrackers rose above Swiss cities.

The strict ban on fireworks, for example on the St. Gallen monastery square, applies every year. But this time it should remain very quiet on New Year’s Eve due to the risk of coronavirus spreading. The local authorities had specifically called on people to avoid gatherings and to celebrate at home on a small scale. Usually hundreds of people toast the New Year on the square.

Although it remained comparatively quiet on Friday night, the security forces often did not have a comfortable time. Shortly after midnight at the operations center of the Zurich City Police, the Keystone-SDA news agency said that the staff had a lot to do. Although there have been no major incidents so far, there are very many smaller incidents. The Bern canton police, on the other hand, were unusually tight-lipped and did not want to provide any information about the current situation in their area. It was just said that it was too early to make an assessment.
