Switzerland: Vevey: the Municipality will go from 5 to 7 members – Switzerland: French-speaking Switzerland

The Municipality of Vevey will go from five to seven members in the next legislature on July 1, 2021. The Municipal Council accepted this proposal from the Vevey Agreement (PLR, UDC, PDC) by a very large majority Thursday evening.

Several reasons led to this decision, indicated on Saturday the veveysan municipal Jérôme Christen to Keystone-ATS. He returned to information published by the daily newspaper 24 heures.

Enlargement improves the chances of wider political representation. It also helps to better manage the workload and to interest people who want to stay in working life, noted the elected official of Vevey libre.

In a Municipality of seven, conflicting problems, such as those experienced by the Veveysan Executive, can be more easily diluted. Finally, like Montreux, several municipalities of comparable importance operate with seven municipalities.

Recurring question

If the position of trustee remains at 80%, the other six municipalities will exercise their function at 50% instead of 60% currently. They will be elected in the next municipal elections and will take office on July 1, 2021.

This is not the first time that this question has arisen in Vevey, notes M.Christen. It has been four times in 40 years, without success. The last time, some twenty years ago, it was refused by the people in a referendum.

Additional election

The municipal elections which will take place in the spring of 2021 will thus be widely opened. The Veveysans will however return to the polls before this date: the municipal PLR Etienne Rivier holding the only seat on the right announced his resignation last Thursday at the same Municipal Council. The by-election is scheduled to take place this spring.

In addition to the departing PLR, the Executive currently has a Verte, the syndic Elina Leimgruber, and two free Vevey municipal officials Jérôme Christen and Michel Agnant. Prosecuted for suspicion of unfair management of public property, their socialist colleague Lionel Girardin has been suspended since June 2018. The Municipality has experienced other difficulties due to internal tensions, but also to the suspension and then the reintegration of the two elected members of Vevey Libre. (Ps / nxp)
