The War Material Act previously prohibited the transfer of weapons and ammunition from Switzerland to third countries.
Ammunition has been running out in Ukraine for months. EU countries want to supply, but see their own stocks dwindling. In addition, some weapons and ammunition that were purchased years ago from Switzerland, for example, have not yet been delivered to Ukraine.
That should change now. The two chambers of the Swiss Parliament, the National Council and the City Council, voted in favor of amending the War Material Act tuned. This will enable the transfer of war material to Ukraine in the future.
Until now, weapons and ammunition purchased from abroad could not be passed on to countries involved in armed conflicts.
Due to the legal situation, Switzerland had refused Germany, among other things, approval to supply ammunition for the German Gepard tank.
Did South Africa supply arms to Russia?
Russia, for its part, may have been supplied with munitions from South Africa, the US ambassador in Johannesburg believes.
Reuben Brigety reportedly said in a meeting with local media on Thursday that he would bet his life that South Africa had supplied arms to President Vladimir Putin’s army.
The delivery is said to have taken place last December and was delivered via a Russian ship docked in Cape Town.
The country has promised to investigate the allegations but has expressed disappointment at the allegations. President Ramaphosa called for evidence of the suspicion.
Officially, South Africa has a neutral position in the war in Ukraine. However, in February the country took part in naval maneuvers by Russia and China. When the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Vladimir Putin, President Ramaphosa initially considered withdrawing from the World Court – but then changed his mind and spoke of a mistake.
