Thousands of refugees have been stranded in Greece. Switzerland should take this up unbureaucratically – a petition that is supported by over 11,000 people calls for this.
Switzerland is expected to take in 5,000 refugees stranded on Greek islands. A petition that was submitted to the Federal Chancellery on Tuesday requires it.
“Where is Switzerland’s humanitarian tradition?” Is the question raised by a petition. The demand is clear: “Take in refugees now.” 11,500 people have signed the petition of the Vaudois organization Médecins Action Sante Migrant-es MASM.
“We demand from the Federal Council and former canton doctor Ignazio Cassis that Switzerland finally takes action, takes in refugees unbureaucratically and carries out their asylum procedures directly in Switzerland,” said the initiators of the petition.
On December 15, 2020, 17 doctors from the MASM association of the canton of Vaud appealed in an open letter to Federal Councilor Cassis, the former canton doctor, to bring 5000 of the refugees stranded on the Greek islands to Switzerland quickly and unbureaucratically. They also called on him to work in the Federal Council for more humanity and the humanitarian tradition of Switzerland.
