Switzerland should become less dependent on international supply chains | Switzerland

SWITZERLAND [NEWS SERVICE] ⋅ At the beginning of the corona crisis, there were sometimes empty shelves in supermarkets. In order to avoid this in future crises, Switzerland should become less dependent on goods from abroad.

(mg) Switzerland is to become more independent of international supply and production chains for essential goods. This calls for a motion from Brigitte Hberli-Koller’s council of states (Die Mitte / TG). The National Council also approved it on Thursday and thus gave the Federal Council a corresponding mandate. The councils hope that security of supply will be better guaranteed in future crises.

It is true that it was difficult to have enough goods at times. There were also empty shelves, said Federal President Guy Parmelin. The supply chains were subjected to severe tests during the pandemic, but for the most part they worked – also thanks to Switzerland’s good relationships with its trading partners. The Federal Council has announced improvements in various areas and is still analyzing what is happening.

Certain measures have also already been called for and decided in parliament. Parmelin was the name of the compulsory stock of ethanol. He did not see any need for further action at the moment. The big chamber was of a different opinion and transferred the motion with 130 to 54 votes.
