Shopping in Germany is attractive to many Swiss because of the low prices. However, shopping tourism is a concern in the Swiss retail sector. Now the government in Bern is acting.
The Swiss government wants to ban shopping tourism at the border to protect domestic sales: Switzerland cuts half the value of purchases for private use that can be imported duty-free. This was announced by the Ministry of Finance. This means: From next year, tourists buying from Switzerland will only be allowed to bring goods worth 150 francs (around 160 euros) from abroad into Switzerland duty-free. Previously, the allowance was twice as high as 300 francs. If this amount is exceeded, VAT of approximately eight percent is payable in Switzerland.
Peter Vogl owns a sports shop in Lörrach. He fears that sales may decline. About every third customer comes from Switzerland. The Swiss are an important customer base for Peter Vogl. But not only for him, also for other sellers on the border.
