The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) announced on Friday that the candidacy under the slogan “A Plus for Peace” was presented to the representatives of all UN missions.
The two federal councilors originally wanted to travel to the USA for this purpose. Because of the corona-related entry restrictions, the event was then only carried out virtually.
In her video address, the Federal President emphasized the importance of dialogue in building consensus. Switzerland is always looking for amicable solutions both domestically and internationally.
Cassis emphasized Switzerland’s commitment to the rule of law, democracy and peace and security. Switzerland is known as a reliable partner with a long tradition in peacebuilding, said the Foreign Minister. Furthermore, Switzerland has the importance of international Geneva and the “defining role in developments in innovation and digitization”.
The Swiss candidacy was officially submitted in 2011. A non-permanent seat in the highest UN body would allow Switzerland to “stand up for its foreign policy goals and use its strengths for the benefit of peace and security,” the communiqué continued. The election will take place in June 2022.
