Recently, the Swiss government has been increasingly called upon to lift the ban on the supply of weapons to Kyiv, although there is still no consensus in parliament on this matter. A bill was recently submitted to parliament that would allow the government to allow the re-export of Swiss weapons to countries with the same democratic values as Switzerland.
“We want to be neutral, but we are part of the Western world,” said Thierry Burkart, leader of the centre-right FDP party, which authored a law lifting the ban on arms re-exports to Ukraine.
According to him, the Swiss authorities should not have a veto to prevent others from helping Ukraine. Otherwise, the extension of such a ban would indicate support for Russia.
According to a recent sociological study, 55% of the Swiss are in favor of lifting the ban on the re-export of weapons and their supply to Ukraine.
“If we had asked this question before the war, the level of support would probably have been less than 25%. In the past, the rejection of neutrality was a taboo subject,” said Lukas Golder, head of the GFS-Bern polling company.
