The warmest air masses moved across the country from Wednesday to Thursday, a spokesman for MeteoSwiss told the Keystone-SDA news agency. It will probably not get hotter than today in the next few days. However, it is currently too warm for the time of year.
SRF Meteo also sees it this way: “It is significantly warmer than you would expect in May. The maximum values are around 10 degrees above the norm,” it said on request. The summery temperatures continued until at least the middle of next week.
Over 28 degrees in Visp, Sion and Basel
According to the MeteoSwiss temperature map, it was also hot on Wednesday in Visp with 28.9 degrees or in Sion with 28.6 degrees. In Basel, where 25 degrees had been measured before noon today, the thermometer climbed to 28.1 degrees.
The warm air masses move over Switzerland just at the time of the ice saints. These last from May 11th to May 14th and conclude with “Kalte Sophie” on May 15th. According to tradition, spring frosts should occur during this time. According to Meteoschweiz, however, this cannot be confirmed statistically.
