Switzerland: jet fighter crashes near vacation area – pilot remains uninjured

A fighter jet had an accident in the canton of Obwalden in central Switzerland. As the Swiss Ministry of Defense announced on Twitter, the crash occurred near the Melchsee-Frutt ski resort at around 9 a.m. The pilot was able to save himself with an ejector seat and parachute and was uninjured.

According to the military, the jet was on a training flight and served as a sparring partner for other fighter jets of the Swiss Air Force. The military justice is now investigating the cause of the accident.

Already the second crash of a Swiss F-5

The aircraft was an F-5 from the US company Northrop. The Swiss Army owns several dozen of these machines from 1976 and 1983/84.

In June 2016, a Swiss Army aircraft of this type crashed while training before an air show in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands. There, too, the pilot was able to save himself with the ejection seat.
