SP Federal Councilor Simonetta Sommaruga wants to bring the international climate summit to Switzerland. According to that Tages-Anzeiger her department is brooding over corresponding plans. Switzerland has never been a guest country, but that could change now, he said Tages-Anzeiger.
A climate summit in Switzerland is not as exclusive as Sommaruga wants to sell us. The second international climate conference (COP2) took place in Geneva in 1996.
The question is more, why is the SP Federal Councilor now coming up with such a project? Is she trying to lather up voters about future votes on carbon laws?
The Swiss like to see their country and their magistrates in the spotlight around the world. This could be observed in 2014 when Foreign Minister Didier Burkhalter (FDP) presided over the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). He presented himself as a peace missionary in Ukraine. The Neuchâtel was then named Swiss of the Year.
Of course, the suspicion immediately arises that Sommaruga is trying to organize a prestigious office for the time after her resignation as Federal Councilor.
In any case, Switzerland is the wrong country for international climate conferences. When it comes to CO2 reductions and climate protection, we have done our homework in an almost exemplary manner.
She should advocate setting up such conferences in countries that have some catching up to do, such as the USA for example. That would certainly have more signal effect.
