“In densely populated cantons, the supply of six-digit combinations that can be formed on license plates will be exhausted in the foreseeable future.” The Federal Council gave an initial response to a question from National Councilor Peter Schilliger (PLR / LU) on Monday. In an intervention filed at Question Time, the elected official was concerned about the progress of the project for new car plates.
“An overhaul of the license plates is fundamentally unavoidable, replies the Federal Council, but not yet urgent”. Peter Schilliger also wanted to know that it was the future of the acronym (CH), which motorists affix to the back of their vehicle with a sticker. Answer: “As part of this redesign, the Federal Council will consider, in addition to other optimizations, also the replacement of the sticker (CH) by the integration of the state symbol in the license plate”.
While the redesign of the license plates is not urgent, it will still begin later this year and its implementation is planned by 2026.
