Switzerland in the Ukraine conflict: neutrality with sanctions

Neutrality is rightly a valuable asset for Switzerland. But when it comes to the principle of territorial integrity and sovereignty of states, there cannot and must not be a neutral stance. Switzerland should also lend a hand with tough sanctions.

Keeping the channels of communication open, but also taking a clear position: At the end of January, State Secretary Livia Leu received the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Vladimir Titov in Bern. On Tuesday, she unequivocally condemned Russia’s actions in Ukraine.

The recognition of the so-called People’s Republics of Donetsk and Luhansk as independent states and the deployment of the Russian military to these areas violate the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine and thus international law, which Switzerland strongly condemns. The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs stated this unequivocally on Tuesday and announced it to the Russian ambassador who had been summoned to the Foreign Ministry. Has this damaged Switzerland’s neutrality?
