The event will take place in the St. Jakobshalle, which is known for tennis tournaments and other sporting events. It has space for 12,000 people. There will also be a live broadcast in the nearby football stadium, which has space for 20,000 spectators.
Basel is located directly on the border with Germany and France. The city applied with the motto “Overcoming Borders”. “The ESC connects and inspires, across all borders,” Basel wrote in its application, recommending itself with its “cosmopolitan scene.”
Hotel prices rise even before announcement
“With the Eurovision Song Contest, we are turning the three-country region into the 40-country region,” said the non-partisan mayor Jörg Lutz in the city’s application video. In Lörrach, for example, many guests could stay overnight. In Basel, hotel prices had already risen to several hundred euros per night, even for simple accommodation, before the announcement.
In May, Nemo won this year’s ESC in Malmö, Sweden. Nemo’s performance of the song The Code received the most votes by a clear margin. Germany came in first with the singer Isaak and his song Always on the run in twelfth place out of 25 finalists.
For the Switzerland It is the third ESC: It hosted the first competition in 1956 in Lugano and won with the pop singer Lys Assia. The Canadian Céline Dion won a second time in 1988 and thus launched her international career. The following year the competition took place in Lausanne. Germany has won twice so far: Nicole in 1982 with A little peace and Lena Meyer-Landrut 2010 with Satellite.
