(Keystone-SDA) Switzerland will return as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council from next January until the end of 2027. The UN General Assembly re-elected Switzerland to the council after five years on Wednesday in New York.
This return was considered safe as Switzerland, along with Spain and Iceland, claimed the three seats allocated to their regional group. Switzerland received 175 votes out of 183 eligible voters.
Switzerland’s last term of office among the 47 members of the body expired five years ago. Since then, she has been able to take part in the discussions, but not to vote on draft resolutions.
Switzerland had not sought membership in recent years in order not to cause confusion with its candidacy for the UN Security Council in New York. Now her two-year mandate in the most powerful body of the UN system, which she currently controls for a month, expires at the end of December.
Switzerland is a member of the UN Human Rights Council for the fourth time.
