Switzerland deploys the army in hospitals and vaccination centers due to the covid crisis

The Government of Switzerland has approved this Tuesday the deployment of the military to carry out “support” work in hospitals, vaccination centers or transport of patients due to the “high number of cases” and the critical situation in health centers, under pressure from the rebound in coronavirus infections.

Total about 2,500 soldiers will be deployed, which will travel to the different Swiss cantons at the request of the local authorities. The decision has been justified by the Swiss Federal Council “due to the high number of cases and the situation in hospitals“.

Tasks that Soldiers will be able to perform include support to staff in hospital facilities, as well as support with vaccination or in intensive care units for the relocation of patients, the Government has indicated in a statement.

The decision, the third time that the Government approves the mobilization of the military since the outbreak of the pandemic, is valid until March 31, 2022.

According to the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health, almost a third of patients admitted to intensive care units are people with coronavirus, while the incidence in the last 14 days is almost 1,270 people per 100,000 inhabitants.

Meanwhile, the population’s vaccination figures seem stagnant, with 66 percent of the inhabitants immunized. In the last 24 hours, health authorities have confirmed almost 10,000 new cases of COVID-10.
