Switzerland won a Davis Cup duel with Germany for the first time and qualified for the final round of the 16 best teams in September.
The Swiss defeated the DTB team led by Olympic champion Alexander Zverev 3-2 in the qualification in Trier on Saturday. Second-seeded France, the USA (4), Serbia (6) and Sweden (9) also make it up.
In Trier, the Swiss Stan Wawrinka lost his singles against Zverev and also in doubles, but with the victory in the decisive singles he becomes the match winner.
Wawrinka prevailed against Daniel Altmaier after an initially clear lead only after a big fight 6: 3, 5: 7, 6: 4 and ensured the Swiss team’s premiere victory in the tenth neighborhood duel.
Serbia continue without Djokovic
France trail 2-1 after beating Hungary 3-2, but Adrian Mannarino and Ugo Humbert win the final two singles.
The US team is safe in the 4-0 win in Uzbekistan, as are the Serbs, who played without Novak Djokovic, in the 4-0 win in Norway. Sweden defeated Bosnia-Herzegovina 3-1, with Leo Borg, the 19-year-old son of legend Björn Borg, not playing.
Defending champions Canada and 2022 finalists Australia, as well as Italy and Spain are seeded for the finals tournament.
