Switzerland suffered against the USA on the second day of the Women’s World Cup. In Brampton, Canada, the Swiss lost heavily 9-1 against one of the favorite teams of this tournament.
After their initial defeat against Canada (0-4), the Swiss coach Colin Muller rubbed shoulders with the 2nd great nation of women’s hockey. Defeat is therefore completely normal. Two particular facts marked this part. First, Switzerland is now on the World Championship record book. It is indeed the team that received the fastest goal in the history of the World Cup.
Between the time the puck fell for the 1st frame and Abbey “Rocket” Murphy’s goal, only 7 (!) seconds passed. The American striker reviewed the entire Swiss defense to beat goalkeeper Saskia Maurer. The old one was 13” and dated from 1994.
Fifteen years of waiting
This meeting will still have a positive flavor for the Swiss players, who have finally scored a goal for the Americans. Rahel Enzler took over a dismissal from the American door to score 7-1 in power-play (51st). An event, since the Helvetians had not scored against them in an official match since 2008 (14 matches)!
Switzerland will play two more matches in the preliminary round against Japan and the Czech Republic, two more affordable opponents. Qualification for the quarter-finals is automatically acquired.
