Switzerland has called for de-escalation in the Middle East in the United Nations Security Council. International humanitarian law must be respected, the Swiss representation stressed again.
Switzerland is deeply concerned about the situation in the Middle East, according to a message on the short message service X on Saturday night. The Swiss representation in the UN Security Council called for an end to the hostilities and for Resolution 1701 to be fully implemented.
Switzerland thus joined the call of UN Secretary-General António Guterres. In the conflict between Israel and the Hezbollah militia in Lebanon, he had already called for the parties to “urgently return to the full implementation of Security Council Resolution 1701 and immediately move towards a cessation of hostilities,” as Guterres said in New York at the end of June.
Israel wants to use military and diplomatic pressure to force the Lebanese Hezbollah militia to withdraw behind the Litani River, 30 kilometers from the border – as required by UN Resolution 1701. So far, Hezbollah has only wanted to stop the fighting once a ceasefire has been reached in Gaza.
