Switching to Sustainable Containers: Plastic Disposable Containers to be Banned

After the plastic bags, plastic disposable containers will also have to be paid for. That rule goes into effect next weekend. So if you get fries at the snack bar, you can no longer just get them in a plastic container.

That means paying extra or bringing your own pan to put the fries in. The government wants to reduce the mountain of plastic litter in this way.

Entrepreneur Ria Dekker of BrasseRia & FrieteRia in Dronten already got rid of the plastic containers two years ago. “We have cane sugar pulp containers here. You can throw them in the GFT, because they are completely recycled.”

No soggy bowl
Cardboard trays will soon be allowed, but Dekker did not like that. “We don’t like those very much ourselves, because they are a bit weak. And this is really a very sturdy container,” she says about her cane sugar pulp containers.

The snack bar owner therefore decided not to wait for the government’s deadline, but made the switch two years ago when the ban on plastic disposable trays was announced. “We said: let’s do it, because it has to happen sometime.”

“We think very closely about the environment.”

— Ria Dekker, snack bar owner

Sustainable business
The sustainable cane sugar containers are more expensive than the traditional plastic containers. But Dekker thinks that investment is definitely worth it. “We really took that for granted. We think very closely about the environment. We also have solar panels.” Earlier this year she won the Innovation Award for a new type of deep fryer that is heated with infrared radiation and uses 30 percent less energy.

Because the regular customers of Brasseria & FrieteRia are already used to the new containers, Ria Dekker does not expect that a lot of people will suddenly be on the sidewalk next weekend with their own pan. “Because our family portions already go in a paper bag. And that is environmentally friendly anyway.”

‘Absurd measure’
Omroep Flevoland also spoke to a few other catering entrepreneurs in Dronten who do use plastic disposable containers, such as a snack bar and a takeaway restaurant. They do not want to respond in front of the camera and say they find the government’s measure absurd and unworkable. They therefore refuse to ask their customers extra money for disposable plastic containers from Saturday.
