The “Swisstainable on the move” campaign was launched today with the christening of the Swisstainable locomotive at Zurich Main Station. After Roger Federer as ambassador for The Grand Train Tour of Switzerland, Switzerland Tourism has now been able to win an equally well-known person as godmother of the new locomotive: entertainer Michelle Hunziker.
The Swiss-Italian TV presenter, together with ST director Martin Nydegger and Véronique Stephan, head of the SBB market for passenger transport, christened the Swisstainable locomotive in front of numerous guests and many onlookers who wanted to catch a glimpse of platform 12.
The Swisstainable locomotive drives through the whole of Switzerland to draw attention to the topic of sustainability. In addition, “Swisstainable on the road” can be seen on social media and other digital channels, on posters, in print media or as part of the SRF Meteo program.
Swisstainable was developed in 2021 by ST together with the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and the Swiss tourism sector as a sustainability program “by the industry for the industry”. The program supports tourism businesses in putting sustainability into practice.
The industry is thus making an important contribution to achieving the 17 UN sustainability goals (Sustainable Development Goals) as part of the federal government’s 2030 Agenda. The program is not a certification, but refers to existing national and international sustainability certifications.
On vacation by train
A study commissioned by ST and carried out by Appinio in April 2023 shows that Switzerland Tourism is on the right track. When it comes to the summer vacation plans of the Swiss population, the survey shows that they still love their homeland: 43% of those surveyed want to spend their vacation in their own country this summer. 30% are planning to do this abroad, while 22% are still planning to do so. 6% do not intend to take a summer vacation at all.
Of the locals surveyed who are staying in Switzerland for their summer holidays, 51% said they would travel by car and only 45% would prefer to take the train. In total, that is 19% of all people surveyed living in Switzerland who are already certain that they want to enjoy their summer holidays at home and take the train to do so.
After all, rail is the most climate-friendly and energy-efficient means of mass transport. This is exactly where the nationwide communication campaign “Swisstainable on the road” by ST and SBB comes in: It wants to increase the proportion of train journeys during the summer holidays and promote sustainable accommodation in Swiss tourism. Because mobility plays a key role in making Swiss tourism more sustainable.
19 percent is already a solid proportion when every fifth person gets on the train to go on vacation. One of the media questions at today’s presentation was to what level this share should increase. “Our wish is 40 percent,” said ST media spokesman Markus Berger.
New overnight packages
New overnight packages were put together for the “Swisstainable on the go” sustainability campaign (bookable from June 20th). These only include hotels that participate in the Swisstainable program. In addition, the return journey by train is free for the first 2400 bookings.
If this quota is exhausted, the train tickets in 1st or 2nd class can still be booked with a discount of 40% in addition to the overnight package. The RailAway adventure offers offer a 20% discount on admission and a 20% discount on public transport.
