On September 2, 1998, Swissair Flight 111 crashed into the sea off the Canadian coast. 229 people died. It was the most costly air accident in Swiss history. The crash of the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 traumatized the whole of Switzerland.
The cause of the flight from New York to Geneva was a fire in the cockpit, caused by a short circuit in a newly installed entertainment system. The pilots fought desperately to prevent the system from failing, but had no chance. An investigation revealed serious safety deficiencies, but completely exonerated the pilots.
