The home European Championship for the women’s national team starts in 500 days. The Swiss camp is in good spirits and has ambitious goals.
It will still be a while until July 2, 2025 and the start of the Women’s European Championship in Switzerland. The European Championships were launched in Bern on Friday, 500 days before the start of the major event.
“It’s a great feeling to be visiting the biggest event in women’s football in Europe,” enthuses Marion Daube, director of Swiss women’s football.
80,000 licensed players by 2027
“Summit of Emotions” is the slogan of the tournament. In order to create these emotions in a year and a half, Daube has a roadmap: “You have to involve the clubs and regional associations, go to schools, organize camps and festivals and activate the whole country.”

The association has concrete, “ambitious” goals according to Daube: “We want to have 80,000 licensed players in Switzerland, if possible by the end of 2027,” said the director. In addition, 4,000 girls are to be actively engaged as trainers, officials or referees over the next few years and the number of spectators for the Women’s Super League is to be doubled.
Finances are a problem area: The Federal Council “only” wants to support the tournament with 4 million, which the SFV commented at the beginning of February as “only partially enough”. Tournament director Doris Keller explains: “The missing money will be particularly evident in the way Switzerland presents itself to the outside world. The tournament itself is also financed by income generated by UEFA.
The ball is currently in Parliament’s court when it comes to financial support. The final decision will be made in June as to whether improvements can be made and whether greater support can be expected.
