Swiss voters approve 13th AHV with historic majority in canton of Jura

8.2% of voters and 15 cantons said YES to a 13th AHV, only 8 cantons were against it. This means that the popular initiative of the trade unions, the Left and the Greens was accepted, which was considered rather unlikely at the beginning of the voting campaign.

Approval was greatest in the canton of Jura, where over 82% said YES. In the canton of St.Gallen only 48.7% were in favor of the 13th pension, i.e. the majority were against it.

The “Neue Zürcher Zeitung – NZZ” calls the result historic and writes: “For the first time in Swiss history, the unions have succeeded in helping an initiative to expand the welfare state achieve a breakthrough.”

The Tagesanzeiger notes that the verdict is a “sensation” and predicts: “The mood in the country has changed. The unions’ great success sets a signal for the rest of the elections this year.”

Blick reports on tears of emotion and that the pension will be paid out for the first time in 2026.

However, all commentators are wondering how this increase will be paid for.
