The group statement from the AL, Greens and SP accuses the city police of structural racism. This was only due to individual cases that occurred a long time ago, Rykart said at the local council meeting on Wednesday. “You actually say that all police officers are racists,” she said. They are particularly sensitive to this.
There have been hardly any complaints about discrimination by police officers in recent years. Clear criteria would apply to controls, said the police chief. Body cameras and receipts for checks are also listed.
Moritz Bögli (AL), who read out the group’s statement, was “shocked” by Rykart’s answer. The security department does not take the racism problem seriously. Further effective measures are needed.
SVP defends police
The group’s statement referred to a ruling by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). He recently found that the control of a dark-skinned commuter in Zurich main station was discriminatory.
The SVP, however, supported the police in a group statement. This is not racist. Left-wing politicians would try to hinder the police officers in their work, now by accusing them of racial profiling, said parliamentary group leader Samuel Balsiger.
