“Swiss Regulators Consider Stricter Capital Requirements Despite Political Opposition”

Stricter capital requirements are among the most frequently mentioned measures for Swiss big bank regulation. But, of all people, the big UBS critic SVP rejects this because it makes loans more expensive. Like almost everything in life, the capital requirements are also a question of measure.

History doesn’t repeat itself, but it rhymes. You’ve had to think about this saying a lot since the announcement of the rescue package for Credit Suisse almost a month ago. The celebrated indignation of the critics, the authorities’ attempts to calm things down, the calls for “never again” and the proposals for stricter banking regulation are strongly reminiscent of what happened after the state bailout of UBS during the financial crisis of 2008.
