As head of the Swiss Federal Office of Transport, Peter Füglistaler knows what makes a good railway system. He puts his finger in the wound of Deutsche Bahn.
It is not often that the words of a Swiss administrator make waves in Germany. But that is the case with Peter Füglistaler. In an interview with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sunday newspaper, the director of the Swiss Federal Office of Transport (BAV) explained in detail why the Swiss railways (SBB) are so much better than Deutsche Bahn.
The performance gap between the two state rail companies can be seen most strikingly in the punctuality values: In Switzerland, more than 90 percent of passenger trains recently arrived at their destination on time, in Germany this rate was 64 percent in June. At Deutsche Bahn (DB), a train is only considered late if it is 6 minutes or more behind the timetable. According to the definition of the SBB, a delay of 3 minutes is considered a delay.
