What do the Swiss like to do most in their free time? Statistics and surveys provide different answers to these questions.

The last official statistics from the Federal Statistical Office, for example, come from 2019. That is, before the pandemic, which then significantly changed people’s leisure behavior.

Meeting friends and going on trips

According to the Federal Statistical Office, 97 percent of people prefer to meet their friends outside in their free time.

It is unclear what activities they do together, as many leisure activities take place in pairs or groups. Still, 97 percent report a preference for hiking, picnicking and other excursions, while 92 percent prefer sports and fitness.

People also like to celebrate in Switzerland: 74 percent, or almost three quarters of the population, like to attend village and club festivals. Large traditional festivals are popular with 68 percent, while large city festivals attract 44 percent of the population.

The hobbies of the Swiss

A survey by Statista looks different, which asked a total of 11,488 people about their specific hobbies in 2023.

Traveling was the favorite here, mentioned as a hobby by 43 percent of those surveyed. Followed by outdoor activities (41 percent) and meeting friends (40 percent).

It is unclear whether the significant decline in meeting friends is due to the pandemic. It also remains unclear whether these meetings are viewed as just a leisure activity and not a hobby.

Other popular hobbies include quiet activities such as cooking/baking. But reading, playing sports and spending time with pets are also among the most popular activities.

The computer or gaming was mentioned by only a quarter of those surveyed in Statista. At the Federal Statistical Office, however, over half (55 percent) said they played computer games.

Surprisingly, neither television nor smartphones are mentioned among hobbies and leisure activities. Both are probably now so deeply integrated into everyday life that they are no longer consciously noticed.

Leisure: Switzerland’s favorite sports

The country’s national sports include football, skiing and ice hockey. However, only skiing is actually actively practiced.

Around a third of the Swiss population regularly visits the country’s ski areas in the winter months. This puts Switzerland in second place in Europe.

Football and ice hockey, on the other hand, are leading when it comes to attending sporting events in one’s leisure time.

Football and ice hockey stadiums are regularly full and the games in the top leagues achieve high ratings. However, these sports are not actively practiced as much across the population as a whole.

Other popular sports include water sports on the Swiss lakes, horse riding and golf. Stars like Roger Federer have sparked a tennis boom in the country. Cycling is also popular. Numerous cycle paths crisscross the country.

There are also countless mountain bike trails in the mountains. Cyclists benefit from the cooperation with railway companies that transport bicycles and mountain bikes via bicycle shipping.
