Swiss Plane from Zurich to Bilbao Lands Without Luggage, Passengers Left Empty-Handed

BILBAO, KOMPAS.com – A Swiss plane flying from Zurich to Bilbao, Spain, on Saturday (9/9/2023) evening landed without a single item in its luggage.

These items were left behind at the departure airport without the passenger’s knowledge.

The Blick daily reported that passengers had been waiting for more than two hours on the conveyor belt but no bags or suitcases had come out.

Airline spokesman Kavin Ampalam confirmed that the plane operated on behalf of the Edelweiss airline took off with 111 passengers on board, but there was no luggage on board.

“There is a shortage of staff on the ground,” he told AFP, adding that crews were working to improve the situation.

However, after 1 hour 16 minutes, the situation still had not changed and due to operational reasons they flew to Bilbao without luggage.

Ampalam explained that the reason was the need to catch a pick-up in Bilbao and the plane had to immediately return to Zurich before the airport closed that night.

“We understand the situation is uncomfortable for the people involved, and of course we regret any inconvenience,” he said.

Blick quoted passengers as saying the pilot had apologized for the delayed departure in Zurich and cited a lack of personnel, but had not announced the decision to depart without luggage.

Passengers said that no staff had landed in Bilbao and that they waited for luggage for more than two hours.

Staff from Spanish airline Iberia then informed them that the plane had landed without luggage on board.

“Our holiday was ruined,” passenger Carsten Redlich told Blick.

Ampalam admitted that he could not confirm whether the passengers had been informed or not regarding the decision to leave their luggage in Zurich.
