Swiss Milk Industry Organization to Increase Dairy Milk Price by 3 Cents, Farmers Protests Continue

  • The milk industry organization will increase the target price for dairy milk by 3 cents from July.
  • The industry organization announced that a request from producers for an immediate increase of 4 cents did not find a majority in the board.
  • The Zurich farmers were not “completely satisfied” with the announced milk price increase of 3 cents from July.

The board is aware of the difficult market situation. The situation is particularly tense in the cheese sector. The industry organization (BO) Milch is therefore calling for an increase in the cheese-making allowance by 3 cents per kilogram of milk. This is intended to “substantially” improve the tense economic situation of milk producers.

The Zurich farmers therefore continued their protests on Friday evening. According to the Zurich Farmers’ Association (ZBV), the milk price increase is not immediate and the “unjustified price reduction of 2 cents from the beginning of the year” has not been reversed.

Numerous farming families followed the ZBV’s call for memorial marches in Affoltern am Albis, Bülach and Hinwil. With bells ringing and torches they marched to their respective destinations, where a vigil was lit. According to ZBV, a total of around 1,000 people have announced their participation.

The ZBV stated in a communiqué that the increase in milk prices was still a step in the right direction. The increase shows that the industry organization recognizes the tense situation among farming families and that the peaceful dialogue is paying off. That’s why the farmers also wanted to carry thank-you boards for the price adjustment, according to the Zurich Farmers’ Association.

The BO milk is one platform the Swiss dairy industry. Members include 35 regional and national organizations of milk producers and milk processors as well as individual companies from industry and retail.

The BO Milch has the mission and purpose of strengthening the profitability of its members by promoting value creation and market shares at home and abroad.

Already on Thursday, hundreds of farmers protested in several places in western and German-speaking Switzerland and gathered with tractors. They criticized the milk price being too low.

“The aim is to put pressure on the prices of our products,” said Arnaud Rochat, a farmer from Bavois (VD) and co-initiator of the farmers’ protests. They demand long-term, worthwhile prices that also take the costs into account. “It is still a problem when milk is cheaper than bottled water.”
