Swiss Marco Odermatt Wins Alpine Ski World Cup Giant Slalom in Bansko

Swiss Marco Odermatt won Saturday’s giant slalom of the Alpine Ski World Cup in Bansko. This season, he won all six previous “figures” and consolidated his leadership in the discipline and the overall rating. Slovakian Andreas Žampa, who finished in 24th place and won the first points of the season, advanced to the second round after more than two years.

Norwegian Alexander Steen Olsen took second place with a loss of 91 hundredths of a second, Manuel Feller from Austria was third with a deficit of 1.08 seconds. Žampa improved by three places compared to the first round, he had the seventh best time in the second round and was behind the winner by 3.08 seconds. Twenty-six-year-old Odermatt won in Bansko for the first time in his career, and at the same time became the first Swiss to triumph in the Bulgarian center in “Obrak”.

Overall, it was his 34th triumph and 20th in the discipline. In addition to six giant slaloms, he also won the super-G in two downhills this year. On the slope, Banderitza confirmed his role as the favorite, showed a confident ride, was not afraid to take risks and significantly increased his lead from the first lap. He was initially 35 hundredths ahead of Steen Olsen. The latter rode cautiously and had a promising ride, but in the final part he made two big mistakes and in the end only gained five hundredths on Feller.

The Austrian also made mistakes, but managed to return to the ideal track and pace. For Steen Olsen, the podium was only the second in his career. Žampa chose an aggressive approach, which earned him an overall second place after crossing the finish line. In the end, he jumped four places at the expense of Americans Tommy Ford and George Steffey, Harry Laidlaw from Australia and Norwegian Atle Lie McGrath.

The last time he was in the second round was in December 2021. In the Italian Alta Badia, he was then in “obraz” in 23rd place. In Bansko, he appeared in the second round of the giant slalom five years ago, when he finished in 26th position.
