When the ski winter of 1987/88 was over, Céline Dion came. 19-year-old, big voice, massive brunette hair mat – a mixture of girl next door and irritatingly distinctive. The ski season ended with Pirmin Zurbriggen winning the Olympic downhill ahead of Peter Müller, but not quite as gloriously as the previous winter (eight out of ten gold medals at the World Championships). Céline Dion jumped into the breach: First place for Switzerland at the Concours Eurovision de la Chanson in Dublin at the end of April.
