The Swiss job market is stabilizing. According to the personnel service provider Adecco, the number of vacancies in the third quarter shrank significantly compared to the previous year, but increased slightly compared to the previous quarter.

This is shown by the “Swiss Job Market Index” published on Thursday. According to the analysis, the number of open jobs fell by twelve percent in the third quarter compared to the previous quarter. Compared to the second quarter, there was a slight increase of two percent.

This means that the negative trend of the last three quarters has come to an end for the time being, according to the communiqué. In addition, the employment prospects of Swiss companies increased again in the summer for the first time in two years.

Construction with special role

According to the study, the construction industry plays a special role in the labor market. Here too, the number of vacancies fell by seven percent compared to the previous year. But it remains at a historically high level. The number of job vacancies in the construction industry has increased by 70 percent since 2016.

And despite the current decline, the study authors expect that factors such as population growth, limited living space and demographic change will continue to increase the demand for construction workers.

Adecco compiles the job index together with the University of Zurich. It is based on representative quarterly surveys of job offers in the press, on online job portals and on company websites.
