Inflation had already fallen in January and February. Inflation in Switzerland peaked at 3.5 percent in the summer of 2022. In June 2023 it fell below the 2 percent mark for the first time since January 2022.
The recent decline in March is a surprise. Economists surveyed by AWP had estimated annual inflation at between 1.2 and 1.5 percent.
Travel is more expensive, cars are cheaper
Meanwhile, the national consumer price index (CPI) remained unchanged at 107.1 points in March compared to the previous month. According to the information, the price stability compared to the previous month resulted from opposite developments that outweighed each other overall.
Prices for package holidays abroad and air travel have risen, as have those for clothing and shoes. However, the prices for the non-hotel industry and for automobiles have fallen, as have the rental of private transport, according to the BFS.
At the current level, inflation in this country is still moderate compared to abroad. In the Eurozone, for example, it was 2.4 percent in March.
