RIGA – For the rest of the World Championships in Riga and Tampere, the Swiss hockey players have to do without forward Calvin Thürkauf, who injured his shoulder right at the start of Sunday’s match against Norway.
The 25-year-old Lugano player is likely to undergo surgery and will be sidelined for eight weeks. In his absence, Damien Riat from Lausanne, who is the vice-champion of the world from 2018 and will appear in the third championship, will complete the roster of coach Patrik Fischer’s team.
Thürhauf had a goal and an assist in Saturday’s opener against Slovenia in a 7-0 win. He played only 11 seconds against Norway (3:0) and the tournament was over for him. It was the second World Championship in his career for the Zuga native, who also played three games in the NHL for Columbus, and last year he also appeared at the Olympic Games in Beijing.
