Swiss Hikers Urged to Prioritize Safety in New BFU Campaign

Many Swiss hike in the mountains, but by no means all of them prepare for it. The BFU now wants to ensure more security.

the essentials in brief

  • Hiking accidents often occur, among other things, because of overconfidence.
  • Every year, 37,000 people have an accident while hiking in the mountains in this country.
  • According to the BFU, many hikers are insufficiently prepared.

Overconfidence is a major cause of hiking accidents. Every year 42 hikers die in the leisure activity. Since more and more people are hiking regularly – now three out of five residents – the number of accidents is increasing.

Every year, 37,000 people have an accident while hiking in Switzerland. This was announced by the Advice Center for Accident Prevention (BFU) on Tuesday in its latest estimate. Many people are therefore not aware that a mountain hike is not a walk.

BFU studies showed that numerous hikers are insufficiently prepared. If you want to hike on white-red-white marked mountain paths, you have to be sure-footed, not afraid of heights and fit. In addition, only half of the population knows the meaning of the markings on the signposts.

That is why the BFU, together with the Association of Swiss Hiking Trails, is using the red-white-red signposts in the new mountain hiking campaign. The posters on public transport ask you to consider your own abilities for the planned hike.

There is also a self-test on the campaign website with questions about the skills required for hiking. In case of doubt, it should help you to choose the yellow signposted hiking trail instead of the red-white-red marked mountain hiking trail.
