Stars like Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez and Cristiano Ronaldo shine at us with white toothpaste smiles. However, there is much more to it than good toothpaste and perhaps braces: many people have had their real teeth ground down and so-called veneers glued on.
There are even entire accounts on social media dedicated solely to the dental debate. One of them belongs to US dentist Dr. Sarah. Her Tiktok account called “Veneer-Check” has 155,000 followers and 7.2 million likes.
Stars like Cristiano Ronaldo shine at us with perfect white teeth. For Tiktok dentist Dr. Sarah realizes there’s more to it than just toothpaste and braces. She is sure: Ronaldo wears veneers. The trend is also spreading to normal people: In Switzerland, many providers advertise veneers, such as Bestsmile. This is what teeth look like without… …this is what they look like with a set on top… …and this is what they look like with a full set.
She posts videos for almost every star in which she gives her dental assessment. Their conclusion is often similar: Most celebrities from the world of film, sports or music wear bowls over their teeth.
The Swiss ex-Bachelorette Yuliya Benza also revealed that she wears such dental plates. And she is no longer the only one in Switzerland.
More demand – and also more advertising
The Hollywood trend is also catching on with us – you can now register for a new set of teeth with just a few clicks of the mouse. For example at the Migros subsidiary Bestsmile. Veneers there cost up to 17,000 francs, as she writes on her website.
And business is booming: “We noticed a slight increase in demand for veneers last year,” says spokeswoman Carmen Hefti.
He doesn’t have figures for the whole of Switzerland, says Markus Gubler from the Swiss Dental Society (SSO) to Nau.ch. “But what we notice is that more and more providers are advertising veneers.”
Experts warn against low-cost providers in Turkey
According to Gubler, it is not necessary for the teeth to be filed down as much as that of reality star – and shock example – Katie Price. What the British woman is wearing may not be veneers, but rather artificial crowns. To do this, around 70 percent of the tooth is ground down.
The situation is different with veneers: “They do little harm to the tooth. In order to stick the shells on, the teeth often only need to be prepared in a minimally invasive manner.”
This has little to do with the scary photo of Katie Price. “This is an absolute extreme example,” emphasizes Gubler and explains: “There is a trend in Turkey to have completely unnatural-looking teeth inserted.” Price did that too.
The Swiss Dental Association SSO warns against dubious providers. Katie Price, for example, doesn’t wear veneers… …but artificial crowns. This involves grinding down 70 percent of real teeth. (Archive photo) Football coach Jürgen Klopp is also likely to wear veneers… …and according to Tiktok doctor Dr. Sarah also pop star Taylor Swift. Ex-Bachelorette Yuliya also wears veneers, as she revealed in an interview.
The SSO warned about these cheap teeth months ago – on the one hand about the artificial appearance and on the other hand about complications. The problem with such cheap treatments abroad: Crowns and veneers have to be replaced approximately every five to fifteen years. And that puts a lot of strain on the teeth. “The tooth can die, abscesses or nerve damage can occur,” says Gubler.

Gubler therefore emphasizes how important it is to seek advice from a reputable specialist. Then the risk is low and the dental shells would last a “relatively long time” with good care.
But he warns: You should not have veeners inserted before the age of 25. “The teeth grow, change and the transition from tooth to gum shifts.”
“Many people today attach great importance to an aesthetically pleasing smile.”
What’s behind it – like the beauty pressure on social media? According to Migros spokeswoman Hefti, possible reasons include growing health awareness, advances in technology and, of course, aesthetic demands.
«Many people today attach great importance to an aesthetically pleasing smile. Aligners (a type of braces, editor’s note) and veneers are popular options for correcting misaligned teeth, discoloration and other aesthetic problems.”
Maybe Hollywood role models also play a role here.
