Do apprentices work too much?

Apprentices and young workers have to work less. This is what the Swiss Council for Youth Activities (CSAJ) demands. Its delegates, meeting in assembly on Saturday, adopted a resolution on April 1 to demand a reduction in paid working time.

The increase in intensity as well as the flexibilization of salaried work leads to stress and emotional exhaustion in many young people. According to a study by Health Promotion Switzerland, 42% of working people aged 16 to 24 report experiencing a critical level of stress. This drastically increases the risk of both physical and mental illnesses, notes the CSAJ in a press release.

More for volunteering

“A reduction in paid working time for apprentices and young workers also leads to more time in which they can take care of themselves, their fellow human beings and the environment”, argues Lena Bühler, co-president of CSAJ .

Delegates from youth associations, including the Mouvement Scout de Suisse, underlined the importance of voluntary work. However, it is in the age group of 15-29 years that the proportion of volunteers is the lowest in Switzerland, they noted. They therefore hope that a reduction in the working time of young people will lead to a greater willingness to commit.
