The leaders surveyed still see potential in the cloud. According to the study, the companies plan to increase the current share of 36.5% in public clouds of global providers to 41.4% by 2025. The local data centers should also benefit from this. Unlike in some other countries, the hyperscalers do not operate their own data centers in Switzerland, instead they rent from colocation providers.
Due to the cloud boom in recent years, the need for on-premise data centers has continued to decrease. The number of applications operated in the company’s own data centers accounts for only 24.4% of all applications. For the same question in 2018 it was still 47.7% and in 2021 it was still 39.8%.
Cloud replaces your own data center
In the areas of ERP, CRM, SCM and storage, there is still a shift towards private and public clouds and towards hybrid colocation solutions. Private clouds are particularly popular in outsourced data centers with a share of 29.7%. The companies seem to have already achieved their goals here, as they expect only a marginal increase by 2025.
According to the study, it is striking that certain hosting models will lose applications, while the public cloud from local providers will increase in all areas. The hardest hit by churn will be enterprise monolithic applications in self-operated data centers.
Therefore, according to the study, the clearest change is also expected in the area of ERP. Currently 12.7% of the ERP applications are operated in the company’s own data center. By 2025, this figure is projected to be just 2.7%. At the same time, the share of the public cloud is to increase to 28%.
Number of cloud providers is increasing
More dynamics can be expected in the use cases ERP, CRM and SCM, because the companies are still planning corresponding migrations here. The multi-cloud is now a reality for all Swiss companies surveyed. However, they still differ in their applications and scope.
Compared to the earlier studies, it is evident that the number of cloud providers used continues to rise. The number of companies using up to 10 different Infrastructure-as-a-Service providers rose from 22.5% in 2018 to 60% in 2023. In the area of Software as a Service, the number of providers used has increased Even more striking, the number of responses with up to 10 providers climbed from 15.8% in 2018 to 52.7% in 2023.
